Interpretation for Tate Modern: ‘Frida: The Making of An Icon’

I worked on the interpretation of Frida: The Making of an Icon in my role as Assistant Editor (Interpretation) at Tate Modern.
I edited all the captions and wall texts with the Editor to make sure all the writing in the exhibition is engaging and accessible for all audiences!

Frida: The Making of an Icon is all about how Frida Kahlo became one of the most influential artists of all time. There are over 30 original Frida works and 200+ works by artists inspired by her legacy. It’s a huge group show, so it was important to treat each artist with the same level of care and sensitivity.

It was so surreal seeing all the artworks I was editing about in real life.. being alone in a room with an original Frida is something I don’t think I can put into words. I learnt so much from this experience, working with my team and other people across Tate (especially working closely with the curators and the design team). Also loved being a small part of the installation process, laying out all the labels (colour matched beautifully!) under each work, anticipating their eventual union.. I had a blast and am so grateful to have been a part of it all!

Frida’s paintings have this quiet, arresting power to them in person, a presence you can’t look away from. To see so many incredible artworks born from Something of Frida’s… Something that moved each artist just enough to create Something of their own, was equally moving to witness…
